Another one got caught today, it's all over the papers. "Teenager
Arrested in Computer Crime Scandal", "Hacker Arrested after Bank Tampering"...
        Damn kids. They're all alike.

But did you, in your three-piece psychology and 1950's technobrain,
ever take a look behind the eyes of the hacker? Did you ever wonder what
made him tick, what forces shaped him, what may have molded him?
I am a hacker, enter my world...
Mine is a world that begins with school... I'm smarter than most of
the other kids, this crap they teach us bores me...
        Damn underachiever. They're all alike.

I'm in junior high or high school. I've listened to teachers explain
for the fifteenth time how to reduce a fraction. I understand it. "No, Ms.
Smith, I didn't show my work. I did it in my head..."
Damn kid. Probably copied it. They're all alike.

I made a discovery today. I found a computer. Wait a second, this is
cool. It does what I want it to. If it makes a mistake, it's because I
screwed it up. Not because it doesn't like me...
                Or feels threatened by me...
Or thinks I'm a smart ass...
Or doesn't like teaching and shouldn't be here...
Damn kid. All he does is play games. They're all alike.

And then it happened... a door opened to a world... rushing through
the phone line like heroin through an addict's veins, an electronic pulse is
sent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencies is sought... a board is
found.
"This is it... this is where I belong..."
I know everyone here... even if I've never met them, never talked to
them, may never hear from them again... I know you all...
Damn kid. Tying up the phone line again. They're all alike...

You bet your ass we're all alike... we've been spoon-fed baby food at
school when we hungered for steak... the bits of meat that you did let slip
through were pre-chewed and tasteless. We've been dominated by sadists, or
ignored by the apathetic. The few that had something to teach found us will-
ing pupils, but those few are like drops of water in the desert.

This is our world now... the world of the electron and the switch, the
beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without paying
for what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn't run by profiteering gluttons, and
you call us criminals. We explore... and you call us criminals. We seek
after knowledge... and you call us criminals. We exist without skin color,
without nationality, without religious bias... and you call us criminals.
You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to us
and try to make us believe it's for our own good, yet we're the criminals.

Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is
that of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like.
My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me
for.

I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this individual,
but you can't stop us all... after all, we're all alike.

With all of the new technology coming out into the open and exploits being written and systems being cracked it is good to know who of us are true hackers and who are not into hacking to explore. Exploration was our first goal and always should be. We should look back into the past to understand who we are and what we're here for. The reason for all of the exploits and cracking was first to explore, then to free. We fought for freedoms and knew the technology so we couldn't be blinded be corporate and political menaces. We should all remember that to this day as open-source technology increases and freeware become more readily availible it's good to know that so many who have fought for our rights did not have be imprisoned and persecuted without a product. Learn always, ponder the truth, live in freedom and happy hacking.
I came hear today... U.. I felt I could learn exactly about whatever in here.. Thanks for information.

Hacker..
This is the alpha and omega of grey hatters. What better way to explain it. We do it because we can and we can because you challenge us to do so. After all, who isn't at there best when challenged?

a complete classic...probably the best article written on phrack. Amazing...
Hackers, Gamers, and generally anyone who takes man vs. machine to new levels, deffinately need to read this. I'm a speedrunner for the most part, and hacking is something I'm only now becoming interested in, but it's always been, as he said, about perfection on a new playing field... sure, we're not the best in the world... but no one is... at least we try for what perfection we can grant others...

a runner can only run for himself, a gamer can teach a generation...
This is _definitely_ an article which should be translated in as many languages as possible. I just _love_ it, because it reflects the hacker mentality of the 80's, when I wasn't born yet... and I feel that great, noble spirit rushing through me when I read this.

Now, those who claim themselves as hackers are stupid 11-year-old script kiddies, or treacherous Mafioso and terrorists who steal money. *They* must be arrested, put in jail, and punished for their purely evil deeds. *They* are the bad people who must be stopped before it's too late. In comparison, we are innocent. They can't blame anything on us. Stealing money and defacing websites is one thing... but hunting for forbidden knowledge is priceless.

May the whole *real* hackers' scene hear my words.

I think Hacker's Manifesto is the greatest work and inspiration to young hackers.

this is my favorite phrase: "We exist without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias..."

Thank you Luciano.
I think I speak on behalf of every hacker in the world when I say that your opinion, as a civilian, means a lot to us.
Seriously, to have a non-hacker compliment one of us is a rare event.
Luciano Azmodan, on July 7th 2007 at 9:23 pm :
Just finished waching a movie most real hackers must hate. The movie was "Hackers". There is a scene where an FBI agent reads a fragment (or edited part) of this essay and it made me want to know more about it. Wow. It is rare to find work written with so much passion and inspiration now a days... Sad though that we can only express ourselves in such grand fashion only when faced with problems that change our lives. (like getting arrested in this case) But what I wanted to say was that even though I am not a "hacker", I feel honored to know that this type of literature exists. And you guys made it known to us and for that I thank you Phrack.
